Small works

The following is a collection of some of my smaller works.

As a child I used to put my face down in the grass and imagine what that jungle like mass of grass must look like to the insects which dwell there. The grass was an endless world of green stretching out in all directions. I f I were an insect, would it seem like a boundless Eden, or would its ineffable nature terrify as it hid untold terrors. This piece harkens back to those childlike days where curiosity ran rampant. It also however, hints at my analytical obsession with structure and detail. I hope both are noticeable in this art piece.

Though I did not set out to mimic any specific part of nature for this piece, molds and fungus have been a constant source of inspiration for me. Such as with the piece above, sometimes this shows in
my work.

One of my ongoing fascinations is with the structural qualities of nature. I have spent hours upon hours observing, analyzing, and fawning over the endless ways in which nature constructs its various structures. Usually, a simple shape is repeated to create an organic weave of complexity. A tube for example, a simple design, is used over and over in nature. Sometimes to carry blood, sometimes to carry water and other nutrients. Sometimes tubes are used as structural supports or as a hard defense against predators as is the case with tube worms and other sea creatures. This fascination with simple structures being repeated to create complexity is a routine theme in my artwork. I hope the above art piece attests to my ongoing fascination.

One of a series in which I was experimenting with Styrofoam as a my main building blocks. I learned quickly though, that Styrofoam is an unforgiving medium to work with. Although I am happy with the final outcome, I think I will use Styrofoam sparingly in future works.

An ongoing fascination of mine are molds and various types of fungus. In this piece I used recyled corks from wine bottles and applied paint, salt, plaster, and dyes to create a piece which resembles something akin to mold. The photo is a bit darker than the piece appears in person. The piece also has a bit more green in it than this photo portrays.

Dirt at times is also inspirational at times. Basically, anything with a good texture and interesting colors inspires me.

The above six pictures are of a small (4"x4") art pieces made from cardboard, paint, dye, salt, plaster, and cotton swab sticks. 2012. Inspired by moss, and other small types of organic growth.

The above three pictures are of a small (4"x4") piece done on canvas. This piece is made from plaster/paper, paint, dye, salt, plaster, and cotton swab sticks. Though I prefer earthy colors when I do my art work, the vividness of bright colors like those in the above piece are wonderful in their own way. They just do not look as natural to my eye. Still a delight though. Copyright 2012.

A small (4"x4") mixed media piece made from plaster/paper, paper straw coverings, paint, dye, salt, plaster, and sand. Yellow tends to be a difficult color for me to work in due to there being fewer dye choices. I was however, pleased with the way this art piece turned out. Copyright 2012.

A small mixed media piece (4"x4") made from cardboard, paint, dye, salt, plaster, and iodine. Since the process of making my work is sometimes hard to control, I had to rework this piece several times until I arrived at something that was acceptable. I rarely know how a piece like this one will turn out until the last coating of protective matte medium is put on. Copyright 2012.

Small (5"x5") mixed media piece made from cardboard, paint, dye, salt, plaster, talus, and iodine. Since the outcome of my work has an element of variability to it, that is, the end results are partly by happenstance, sometimes I have to rework a piece several times till I get an outcome I like. This was one of those pieces. I am pleased with he end results though. Copyright 2012.
